A small piece of the Black-eared Bushtit puzzle was discovered by one of my New
Mexico birding mentors, Barbara McKnight. The long-time secretary of the New
Mexico Ornithological Society, Barbara had a banding project in the Sandia
Mountains. Sometime in the late 1960s or early ‘70s on her banding site, she
netted a first-year Black-eared Bushtit. A year later, she netted the same bird
with brown “ears.” In the interior mountain race of the Bushtit, this appears
to be a pattern with males. Many have some degree of black in the auriculars
(BNA Online).
