Stop - Look - Obey. Was leading a DFO Field Trip yesterday (09/15/2018) to
Prewitt State Wildlife area in Washington County, CO. We were stopped on
one of the roads in the SWA by a Wildlife Enforcement Officer (Game Warden)
and he checked all of us to make sure that we had either a hunting or
fishing license or a special access permit. The only exception to this rule
is if you are younger than 18 or older than 64. Birding is NOT an exception
to this rule - which is only applicable to Jumbo and Prewitt SWA's. The
fine is $70. Most of us on the trip were over 64 but a couple were not. One
had a Daily Fishing License that was purchased for the Trip. This is NOT
acceptable - but the Officer made an exception. The other person did not
have any license/permit. They were required to purchase a license that day
or face a fine ($70). I am posting this as a warning if you plan to Bird
these areas in the future.
