by Denver Field Ornithologists.
Rare, out of place and out of season species of note include:
(* indicates new information on this species; CAPITAL LETTERS are used to
identify very rare species as listed by the Colorado Bird Records Committee)
PINK-FOOTED GOOSE - WELD COUNTY
Note this is an extremely rare vagrant to Eastern North America; almost unheard
of in Western North America. Steve Mlodinow found the bird aprox. 10 AM on
Tuesday, Dec 11 and subsequently posted a thorough summary on previous
sightings and detailed rationale for the Colorado Bird Records Committee to
ponder. There is no guarantee this is a wild bird; but this might be your only
chance to see one.
The bird was last reported yesterday afternoon (Dec 13) at Frederick Lake
(Milavec Reservoir) & Recreation Area in Frederick. It spent much of the
afternoon at the reservoir along with thousands of white-cheeked geese. Close
to sunset the geese flushed, but might have returned to the reservoir.
Prior to the Frederick location the bird w88as in Longmont on Dec. 11 and early
AM Dec 12. It spent most of the the first day in the SW corner of a large pond
adjacent to Idaho Creek Wildlife Area and was typically best seen from along
Weld County Road 7, approximately 1 mile south of State Highway 119.
Observers have been diligent in reporting sightings on CObirds; please check
for any location updates.
