Today (Jan 5th) marked the last day of this year's CBC season. The Sterling count held today was the 20th for this circle including 3 historical counts (1948-1950). The event was celebrated by the largest group of counters ever for Sterling (15) and terrific weather. While this count is traditionally held in mid-December near the start of the count period, my schedule dictated that it be postponed three weeks later than usual. In spite of the late date, there was sufficient open water to host large numbers of geese and ducks, 17 species total but nothing out of the ordinary. Special finds for the count included a 3rd record for Spotted Towhee and 1st records for Northern Mockingbird and American Pipit. The 64 species counted was just about at the 10-year average.
On the previous day, the 8th Flagler CBC was held, again to the ideal conditions of record warm temperatures and calm winds. However, the circle seemed exceptionally dry and there was no open water to speak of. This led to a relative low species count of 36 and only one new-to-count species, Red-breasted Nuthatch.
