In my post today about Weld County, I misidentified a spider found impaled by a
loggerhead shrike on GR96 w of Weld CR77. I appreciate Janeal Thompson
questioning my ID and we figured it out over the phone. I called the spider a
wolf spider in the family Lycosidae. In reality, the spider is a nursery web
spider in the family Pisauridae, probably the genus Pisaura. In my experience,
spiders are not commonly impaled. This is the first nursery web spider I've
found impaled. The other handful of spiders I've found impaled have been
bigger wolf spiders.
