Flexibility is the name of the game in this crazy weather! We arrived to drizzle yesterday; gave up and went home. It was grey and calm when we arrived today, and we estimated we could open a few nets and get in a couple of hours before the downpour. Turned out to be less than one hour, but worth it for us.......23 birds, the majority of them Yellow-rumpeds, in one big flock. (I thought the bulk of the Yellow-rumpeds had moved through, but I guess not. To date we have banded 177. This is not only a record for Yellow-rumpeds (our previous high in a season was 110 in 2009), but a high for any species at this station. This follows record-breaking numbers at Barr last fall.) Here's the breakdown of the 23 today:
House Wren 1 Yellow Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 4 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon 16 Green-tailed Towhee 1 (FOS) We will be open daily, WEATHER PERMITTING, through May 31, except for Memorial Day. We are opening nets at 6:30, and most days will have birds back at the station by 7:15. We aim to close by noon most days, earlier if it is very hot, very cold, or very windy. Registration is required for all weekend visitors; see the Denver Audubon website to sign up. Individuals may visit weekdays without registering before the school groups arrive, which is usually around 10 a.m. Come visit!
