Hey COBirders,

One goal banding at Clear Spring Ranch this spring was to see if there were any
birds still moving on June 1 (or beyond), but things slowed significantly the
last two days, and I closed down my station today. I observed/caught TWO
migrants yesterday, and 6 today. Most everything else was local breeders, and I
don’t like bothering them.

Meredith, I DO watch your posts to see if there is any connection between what
you are getting at Chatfield, and what I had here in S El Paso Co. Many days
there was similarity, but you usually had bigger numbers. Many days our species
lists matched pretty closely. Fun!

I, too, had record numbers, 1040 birds, compared to my previous amazingly high
number of 925 in 2017. I didn’t get the Virginia’s Warbler, Dusky Flycatcher,
or Yellow-rumped Warbler numbers you did, but I had record numbers of Chipping
Sparrows, Lincoln Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows (records for both Gambell's
and Mountain ssp),Yellow Warblers, Orange-crowned Warblers, Yellow-rumped
Warblers (still only 17), Warbling Vireos, and almost matching record high
numbers in several other species like MacGillivray’s Warbler, Wilson’s Warbler
and Swainson’s Thrush.

I agree that the cool, misty, SE wind days we had brought in huge numbers, and
even several still, clear days (and nights) brought in good numbers on several
occasions. In a lot of ways I felt like migration for many was a little later
that I had been seeing, and some expected regular species barely showed up at
all. (Still on their way???).

It still amazes me that I get many birds at all. There doesn’t appear to me to
be anything special about my riparian area that would make birds pass through
at ground level, but they do!
If I’m not traveling I plan to re-open around August 1 to start catching Yellow
Warblers that are already on the move by then. Too much fun.

Have a good summer,
Steve Brown
