Boulder County Audubon Society is delighted to offer this half-day seminar
focused on native plants and insects. Learn how front range gardeners can
help offset the profound losses we are experiencing as ever more
development consumes essential habitats. We would like to thank Connie
Holsinger, founder of the Habitat Hero program, for underwriting this event.

*PROGRAM:*

*BIRDS, WHAT THEY REALLY, REALLY WANT*

*Presenter: Scott Severs*

Why are insects so important to all other animals? Scott will illustrate
how native plants help insure the critical insect diversity needed in a
healthy backyard ecosystem. His power point presentation will amaze you
with the beauty and variety of insects that birds and mammals depend on to
flourish. You will learn why our native insects cannot thrive on imported
greenery.

*Scott Severs* has been fascinated by insects since his grandmother first
read him *We Like Bugs*, a wonderful 1962 children’s book by Gladys
Conklin. With a degree in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University,
he enjoys field biology and has taught classes on warblers, sparrows,
dragonflies, bird migration and led bug safaris too!

*PLANT THIS, NOT THAT*

*Presenter: Deryn Davidson*

Deryn will gently guide both new and experienced gardeners towards
different native plants as substitutions for commonly available nursery
choices. Her suggestions usually mirror the space and culture requirements
of what you might otherwise use or consider replacing. Go native as you
build or refurbish your gardens!

*Deryn Davidson* holds a B.S. in Horticulture from Colorado State
University and a Master’s of Landscape Architecture from the University of
Arizona. Her passion for native plants and pollinators grew during her time
as a horticulturist at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin,
TX. Currently, Deryn is the CSU Horticulture Extension Agent for Boulder
County, a position in which she enjoys combining her training in design and
horticulture with ecological function and helping people discover new ways
to incorporate native plants into their home landscapes through good design
and responsible horticultural practices.

*PLANT IT AND THEY WILL COME: GARDENING TO PROVIDE POLLINATOR AND SONGBIRD
HABITAT*

Presenter: Susan Tweit

With inspiring before and after photos, Susan will illustrate how degraded
habitats can be rehabilitated to provide astounding bird, butterfly and
pollinator havens. Her large restoration projects that have won accolades
for beauty and sensitivity. You will learn that with thoughtfully chosen
natives, soil, water and determination, nothing is beyond redemption.

Award-winning writer, *Susan J. Tweit,* is a plant biologist who began her
career studying wildfires, grizzly bear habitat and sagebrush communities
in Yellowstone National Park before realizing that she loved telling the
stories in the data more than collecting that data! She has written twelve
books about nature and life, including *The Rocky Mountain Garden Survival
Guide*, hailed as “the instruction book that should have come with your
yard.” Tweit’s work has appeared in magazines and newspapers ranging
from Audubon
and Popular Mechanics to High Country News and the Los Angeles Times. Her
landscape designs and habitat restoration projects have won recognition
from The Nature Conservancy, Audubon Rockies, and the North American Rock
Garden Society. Tweit helped Connie Holsinger found the Habitat Hero
project, and now lives in the high desert in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
