With overcast, breezy, and mild weather at the start of the morning, I wasn't expecting too many birds today. But we still saw some action with a modest stream of captures throughout the day, ending with 27 newly-banded birds and 1 recapture, of 14 total species. We also surpassed 500 banded birds for the season today!
The top highlight was a first-of-season Sharp-shinned Hawk, a young male, that we got to show off to a visiting group of 1st- and 2nd-graders. There also seemed to be plenty of sparrows and thrushes around; though we didn't catch too many of them, we noticed quite a few more skulking around the nets today. Both of the Hermit Thrushes we banded were likely of the uncommon Pacific Lowland group based on their short wing measurements, just like the individual we caught yesterday.
