Friday at about 7:30 a.m. and again at 1:15 at Rio Blanco SWA near Meeker I saw an unusual Redhead in a group of 15 other Redheads. Its head pattern matched the one in Sibley Birds West, second edition, page 24, which he labeled "white-headed variant." Fortunately that was the field guide I had with me. Now that I'm home, I've looked online and in other field guides but cannot find another reference to that variant.
Has anyone else seen a Redhead in Colorado like the one in Sibley's book? Why is it not included in other field guides? I do not have a photo of the duck and this is one of the few times I've wished I carried a camera. I will appreciate your thoughts about this strange looking duck.
