This past Wednesday we had 38 gracious volunteers participate in the 13th Fountain Creek Christmas Bird Count. It started out a brisk and count-record-cold 5 degrees Fahrenheit but was pleasantly in the 40s eventually. The ground was mostly snow covered.
Observers reported a near-average 84 species and 6099 birds including 21 not identifiable down to species. Two new species for the count were recorded, a House Wren at Heritage Park in Fountain and a Cassin's Finch on Frost Ranch (private). Some other fun birds, for example, include Sora, Western Screech Owl, Ladder-backed Woodpecker, Lewis's Woodpecker, Loggerhead and Northern Shrikes, Marsh and Bewick's Wrens, Curve-billed Thrasher, Gray Catbird, Lincoln, White-throated and Swamp Sparrows and plenty of Canyon Towhees.
