On March 1,6 I observed 2 maybe 3 Pacific Wrens along Upper Williams Canyon
Trail near Manitou Springs and Rampart Range Road. They were heard calling
about 1 mile down the trail from Rampart Range Road and another at about
1.5 miles. The first bird was under a log and I got very close and froze
hoping for a better look then a Pine Squirrel started chattering away which
I thought would ruin things. But it stimulated the wren to jump to the top
of the log where it bobbed up and down, showing its tiny tail, and I
thought wouldn't it be great if it sang for me...then it belted out a few
series of songs! Kind of subdued versions of its songs in a bit of a back
and forth with the squirrel, but it was so wonderful to hear this song in
Colorado On the return hike up the canyon another was heard calling in
between the first two sightings, so possibly a third individual. The
observations were at about 7500 feet. Also about 2 miles down the trail a
Peregrine Falcon was calling and also had my FOS Mountain Bluebirds.

The trail is difficult to access esp. this time of year as Rampart Range
Road is closed to vehicles from Garden of the Gods until April 1. I rode my
mountain bike from Garden of the Gods up Rampart Range Road about 6 miles
to "trailhead" then hiked from there. The obscure unmarked trail in the
Pike National Forest is on the left/western side of the road, about 50
yards past a large radio tower and large green water tank.
