An eBird “Hotspot” is a public birding location that allows birders to
enter data into the same shared location. Then eBird compiles the data and
gives nice summaries of total species, recent visits, top birders, first
and last seen on each species, high counts, printable checklists and
illustrated checklists as well as directions to get to the hotspot.

To find hotspots in your county, go to eBird.org, go to the Explore menu,
and then go to Explore Hotspots. You will notice a color graph in the
lower right of this screen. The colors go from pale gray (0-15) to hot red
(600+) species seen at a hotspot. Type your county in the location field in
the upper right corner (hit the ... if using a smart phone). Tap on the
hotspots in your county to “View Details” on the hotspot. Consider trying
to tip the hotspot to the next color by getting enough new species to bump
it up to the next color level. Or consider trying to become the top birder
in that hotspot.

Here is our checklist from this morning on our local hotspot. I got a video
of the Spotted Towhee singing. Pull the checklist up and then click on the
Dad Clark Park location and it will bring up the hotspot details.

Notice that we are now the top birders in this little hotspot after just 2
visits.

Just another way to have fun birding local.
