This bears checking out if anyone is available. This is from Larry Allison, a good friend of mine. While not necessarily a hardcore birder, he has considerable experience with birding and birders and for many years has done volunteer taxonomic work for the Denver Museum of Natural History and other entities. He is a very careful observer. I’ve copied his note below. There were two observers and after listing to playbacks, both believe it was a whip-poor-will. (Larry and I have done a lot of desert backpacking. He’s very familiar with Common Poor Will.) They were camped near the Colorado Trail on which they were doing volunteer maintenance. This call started just after dusk, went on all night (or at least every time I woke up and listened), still going at 0430 when I made coffee, tempo was very steady and persistent. Probably two individuals, one close and loud with the other further away. I went spotting one night but never observed an individual, too steep/dark for these creaky knees. I'll make a report.
