While traveling from Amarillo back to Denver I took the opportunity to stop off at Lamar CC for a quick walk on Sunday around 12:30. While approaching the signs to the trail at the north parking lot, I heard a two-tone whee - wee. The calling was coming from the large cottonwood that is located immediately east of the electrical substation. After several minutes I was able to see a dark tail that disrupted the parallel symmetry of a large horizontal branch. I was then able to resolve the vertical barred striping of the juvenile Mississippi Kite. Shortly afterwards an adult kite swooped in, make a quick transfer of an insect in the beak to the juvenile, and then swooped off. Robert Hill Westminster, CO
