A perfect mix of cool temps, the right time for first of season species, and a HUGE influx of migrants generally (read Wilson's Warblers) gave us an amazing day of banding! (Note to Steve - Don't know what this says for your next few days at Clear Spring Ranch!)
We banded 113 birds of 18 species, including 8 first of season species, one of which (Philadelphia Vireo) is pretty rare for Barr. A giant first run included 32 of the Wilson's Warblers. Things leveled out as the morning progressed, with more WIWAs mixed in with many surprises. Here's the breakdown: Downy Woodpecker 1 (FOS) Least Flycatcher 1 (FOS) Western Wood-pewee 1 Philadelphia Vireo 1 (FOS, likely only of season!) Black-capped Chickadee 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 (FOS) House Wren 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 (FOS) Gray Catbird 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 (FOS) Townsend's Warbler 8 Northern Waterthrush 1 (FOS) Wilson's Warbler 85 Chipping Sparrow 3 Savannah Sparrow 1 Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1 (FOS) If you'd like to visit this fall: Due to restrictions related to Covid-19, we are requiring visitors to make a reservation and we will have only 6 visitors at the station at a time.
