CFO’s inaugural Colorado Birding Challenge (COBC) was a success! When we began promoting this event in January, we had no idea how many teams would register nor how many people would participate in the fundraising event or how much money would be donated – especially during a pandemic. In the end, we were extremely pleased that 173 birders on 73 teams participated in the event on May 8. Another positive outcome is that data for eBird were generated in 44 Colorado counties.
Thanks to more than three hundred generous donors, we gave a check to Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (BCR) for $35,496. This gift will fund projects to help conserve Colorado’s declining grassland birds. BCR will build a radio telemetry tower to track the movements of grassland birds, generating valuable data that will help inform conservation efforts. Our large donation will also be invested to improve approximately 260 acres of degraded grassland habitat in Chihuahua, Mexico, the wintering grounds for so many of our grassland species. Congratulations to everyone who participated including CFO board members who planned and launched the event, Colorado birders who participated in the event and all the generous donors who contributed to help support CFO’s conservation initiatives.
