Today's list of captures felt like what we should be seeing on October 1 - Bigger birds, sparrows and other later migrants, plus a few resident species that we don't seem to catch until it is really fall. For example, mid-morning, we had 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 2 White-breasted Nuthatches, and a Black-capped Chickadee (all in the same net) and a Flicker. We are also recapturing more birds that we banded in recent weeks, like White-crowned Sparrows, that may be sticking around for the winter. Here's the breakdown for the day:
Northern Flicker Intergrade 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 2 (male and female) Hermit Thrush 2 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 2 [Recaptures included 2 Black-capped Chickadees, 1 Gray Catbird, 2 Spotted Towhees, 1 Song Sparrow and 2 White-crowned Sparrows] We are open 6 days a week, weather permitting through October 23. Closed Mondays.
