In case you go on the road from Pine, on Rte. 285, towards Buffalo Creek:
   Yesterday we stopped at Pine Valley Ranch Park (Jefferson Co. Open Space)
on our way back from cutting our Christmas tree, and took a walk around Pine
Lake (actually a reservoir) - it's partially iced up but there is a large
area of open water, and a close look at the bird sitting in the middle of it
revealed a Common Loon.   The bird was preening vigorously, not moving much;
the lobed, pink feet were very much in evidence. We were able to observe it
for about 15 minutes, and it was still there when we left. This was about
12:30 pm. on Friday, December 3.
    Perhaps the scenery there reminded this bird of its Northwoods home.
