I will take a guess at the bigger increase in checklists in 2014. Cornell released the eBird mobile app in June of 2014. Before that time their were some birders that used BirdLog to log birds on their smart phones. Cornell took over BirdLog and converted it to eBird mobile and that really ushered in the use of smart phones to enter bird lists in the field as they birded.
