Hey COBirders, Nothing rare to report from Clear Spring Ranch banding - just a busy morning for the first time in weeks.
84 birds netted today, 80 sparrows of 5 species, one recap Wilson’s Warbler, 2 Orange-crowned Warblers banded, and a Hangin-around F MacGillivray’s warbler banded a week ago. My latest ever catching a Mac is 10/1, so this one is pretty late. 51 sparrows and the Mac all netted before 7:30! Chipping Sparrows appeared in a large flock yesterday, and I caught a few of them, but today they were doing the typical CHSP flock thing - rushing headlong into the line of nets like machine-gun bullets. One net had 27 at the same time. Very nice, as I have only been banding 1-2 per day for weeks. Also banded bird #1000 for the season was a Lincoln’s Sparrow. I’m happy to get to that high value, but in perspective, I’ve only had one fall this slow in the last 8 years. Birds today: Chipping Sparrow - 64, banded the first 11 Lincoln’s Sparrow 7 Song Sparrow 3 Gambel’s WC Sparrow 5 Spotted Towhee 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 (AD M’s) MacGillivray’s Warbler recap (HY F) Wilson’s Warbler recap from 9/25, (AD F) and that was about it. Except for the CHSP, very little movement was seen today, after a busy sky yesterday - including 115 Blue Jays in 8 open flocks heading downstream. Today - 3 BLJA’s Glad to be busy, finally!
