The "not working" part was that -in_place wasnt making the
changes to the files - they were reported to the screen as if
they had been patched, but doing git diff in another window
wasnt showing them.

Yes, mixed system.
distro versions go into /usr, my builds go to /usr/local
I suspected having both was contributing.
I did delete my version at least once,
I have to repeat the tests more methodically
(with a faster test than -dir drivers in kernel tree)

Arie, thanks for your response. I'll look carefully at it all soon,
but tax-day is really soon, and Ive got to stop doing
displacement activities :-(
