Hmm...

there
is a subject called principles of programming langauge which we are taught..

As per
you question .. you have mentioned about learning a new language.... the best
part is that .. almost all languages fall into some categeory.

like
object oriented../ rule based/ Procedural/ interpreted. / etc.

and
have common rules .. may be it cobol .. asm or java/c# ..

My
point is if you are familiar with the how langauges work .. then the learning
any langauge is just a matter of how to represent your logic.

Now
are far as the list of other things your mentiong like yukon, longhorn etc..
well its clearly not pertaining to langauges .. can be called as new tech or
tools...
Now
the battle of tools is never ending .. today you might have access.. db2. .
oracle. 7,8,9,10g 11i. . sql 7,2k,yukon.. etc ..

But
systems are baised on a some purpose not on a tools..I consider the operating
system as just a platform to put your logic on. not the fundamental of your
logic.

Now if
your platform can give you more then its better cause you focus more on
implementation .... depends on the level of depth you want control
in.

This
is just a perspective... to just keep you learning more and more daily. its
good ..cause otherwise we grow stagnant..

Last
year .. a company was selling cakes where people used to go in vans.. etc.. this
year .. the vansales man .. have a wince device with their whole route and the
system is planned and adds a new dimension into their mode of sales..

So
dont fret friend.. each day bring new light and new things .. otherwise what the
point in moving forward..
Learn
.. but dont forget the fundamentals..

regards
zion
