I know that sounds kind of strange, but today was the first day that
I realized that we owned a cockapoo. We have had Pepper since
March. We bought him when he was 6 wks old as a cocker spaniel.
Obviously we didn't pick a reputable breeder, but at the time, that
wasn't our primary thought. My husband who is a 100% disabled
veteran stays home full time and has been very lonely and depressed.
We wanted to find him a companion. He wanted a german shepherd, but
I said NO! We found Pepper and fell in love. He had been groomed by
the breeder in a cocker cut, and didn't care that she hadn't
registered the litter. From the beginning, he had numerous health
issues...worms, coxidea, ear infection, vomiting and fever from time
to time. We spent alot in vet bills since we had him. Most
recently, he has developed a skin problem. It started when he was 5
mths old, and his outbreaks are so bad that he has been referred to a
dermatologist. On the most recent picture (Private First Class
Pepper Brooks photo album) of him, you will see a mark on his nose.
What you can't tell is that his entire nose is raw, and there is an
open wound by his right eye.
We started noticing that his hair didn't grow long like Cocker
Spaniel hair does, it is fluffy on top, his ears are short and boxy,
his nose is too long, and his body hair is very curly. On top of
that, people who saw him kept asking what he was mixed with. So
anyway, since Pepper has been banned from the groomer till we see the
dermatologist, I got some books from the library, to learn basic tips
to groom him myself. In one I noticed that he didn't favor the
cocker spaniel at all, but in the same book, he favored the standard
poodle more! I googled cockapoo and the first picture I saw looked
just like him. I was so sad...not that he was a cockapoo, but that
we had been lied to. We love him though, he is our baby, and the
best companion my husband could ask for.
