Thanks to everyone who contributed on this - have got it working well
now and have implemented all tips. Working on the array idea now as I
quite like it.
All advice appreciated - every day is a school day!

That's splitting hairs just a little. Most people use the terms
interchangeably, at least informally, and trying to introduce the
distinction just for the sake of it has the potential to confuse
things.
