In the predecessor to Cocoa, NeXTSTEP, there were a handful of methods that were named with bare arguments.

makeCellAt:(int)row :(int)colIt was, for the very reasons you describe, eliminated in the move to OpenStep and, finally, Cocoa. I don't believe there are any such methods left in the supported Cocoa API.
