It appears that it is only possible to access the output of an AMWorkflow if you call runWorkflowAtURL:withInput:error:.
If, as an alternative, I wanted to use AMWorkflowController, there doesn't appear to be a way to extract the output from the AMWorkflow after calling run from the controller.
