This option was on. Now it is off, and all problems have disappeared.
Now that I know what to look for, I found information in "Binding
Options" in "Cocoa Bindings Reference"
and also in "Troubleshooting Cocoa Bindings" in "Cocoa Bindings
Programming Topics".
