So I could use this method to enable/disable the menu item rather than hide it? That may look a bit more pleasing to the user.

-setAutoEnablesItems: doesn't affect visible/hidden, it affects checked/unchecked. So it's unlikely to bear on this problem.

I think you meant enabled/disabled, instead of checked/unchecked.
