Sorry for picking up an old topic, but I'm not sure to have the latest information:

My application is able to deal with Melco's embroidery files. The only way to identify these files is their extension ".exp", unfortunately claimed by the system-declared UTI for "com.apple.symbol-export".

Currently I tweak my app so it pretends to open these exported symbol files and I changed the file type description e. g. for the "Save As" dialog. I'd like to export my own UTI with the file extension "exp" as its tag, because I'm afraid my future Quicklook and Spotlight plugins won't work with two UTIs claiming the same extension.

Is there any recommended procedure dealing with different UTIs defining the same file extension (without hacking CoreTypes.bundle)? I'd like to have my own exported UTI higher prioritized when LauchServices tries to identify the appropiate application, but this seems to be wishful thinking ...

BTW, what happened to "quicklook-dev": I posted something similar there some days ago and it seems to be pretty dead and is not provided as a RSS as well. _______________________________________________
