What reasons could that be? Maybe because you need the SMTP server? You can extract it from the Mail.app config if available. But in general it's fair to assume that if that is a problem you are using the wrong transport. That's for example the reason why FeedbackReporter ( http://vafer.org/projects/feedbackreporter/ ) doesn't use mail but a HTTP connection to send the data and then the server sends an email.
