There's a handy tool called FSEventer that shows me every file your application writes to. Considering that, non-obvious can only be on the moon.

Just create several invisible files somewhere in a few standard locations you can write to. Casual home users will not bother tracking down all of them, so if one is missing you can restore it using the others.
