We're talking about the case in which you don't have a managed object subclass, and therefore there is nothing to cast to.

Oh, right. Cast it to (id) then. Though if it's already passed in as an id, that's obviously unnecessary. Point is, calling setIndex: instead of object.index= will let it compile w/o warnings, in certain situations.
