This is unix and there is a ver nifty tool for such things.
Ultimately u just have to ask yourself how you will handle files that seem wrong. You could also ask yourself how you would handle an unreasonably large PDF file...
Then u can ask yourself if it is really necessary...
It is entirely easy to create a PDF with nothing in it or with egregious amounts of stuff in it that no app could read well yet is a valid PDF

Weigh carefully how far down the rabbit hole you need to go.
"if it needs to be military-secure, why is PDF being used at all?" That sort of thing
