I don't know if it will help, but once upon a time, I solved this problem by subclassing NSBrowser and overriding -mouseDown: to do its own selection and dragging, and invoked a file promise drag by calling -dragPromisedFilesOfTypes:... It was certainly the long way of doing things, but it worked as far back as Jaguar. The problem is, file promise drags are still considered "special" by the OS, and creating them requires calling a special method.
