If you're looking for the portion of the screen which is or is not occupied by 
the Dock, you can check -[NSScreen visibleFrame].

I believe, but am not certain, that the 
NSApplicationDidChangeScreenParametersNotification notification is posted (and 
the -applicationDidChangeScreenParameters: application delegate method is 
called) when the size and/or position of the Dock changes.
