Hi Dave,

I'm not sure I've understood exactly, but perhaps the following get's you going 
in the right direction:

        [textView setHorizontallyResizable:YES];
        [[textView textContainer] setWidthTracksTextView:NO];
        [textView setMaxSize:NSMakeSize(10000, FLT_MAX)];
