That's it, Eric!  Specifically, the cause is KeyCue.  Version 4.5.  Without 
KeyCue, no menu validation until I click a menu, and app is responsive 
immediately.

I also tried quitting LaunchBar and QuicKeys X, but they are innocent.

So it looks like I need to make my menu validation faster, for those users who, 
like me, are using inefficient menu-enhancing utilities.  At least I can push 
this issue down on the priorities a little :|
