While the user can arrange them more or less as they wish, there won't be gaps in that all the rectangles have to touch somewhere (though touching at a corner is permitted and leaves a large gap in a different sense). The union will give you the 'extent' of the available monitor area though not necessarily of course were there are actual displayable pixels.
