Why does it need to be a subview of the scroll view? If you're targeting 10.6 it sounds like you could just make it a peer of the scroll view and size it appropriately. Just make sure that you return NO from -isOpaque if required, and that you fix the z-order in -awakeFromNib (I believe IB still has a bug where it encodes objects in backwards z-order).
