I think that the decline of drawers is to some degree a result of their appearance. The border is too thick, the animation is too slow, the API is too limited. IMHO, the intuitive way to open and close a drawer is to leave a small part of it visible when the drawer is closed, and use that area to toggle opening and closing. I don't enjoy hunting for the toolbar icon or menu item that opens the drawer.
