Generally, but closed betas are the one case where expirations really make sense. It is after all a beta, and you do not want someone still running the beta a year after the actual release, just because the person who was your contact for testing forgot where all he installed it.
I'm had good luck just using a dumb date check and telling users they can set their clock back to get around it if need be.
My goal to force users to test new betas rather than use the first one that works for them and to prevent having to support old betas left in the field.
(I have had bugs introduced late in the beta cycle ship because no one was testing the later betas)
