Does the text field have a formatter? That might be changing its behaviour in 
all sorts of ways. For example, if a number formatter has a maximum value, your 
second string numerically has a much higher value than the first, so it might 
be being rejected by the formatter.

But the mutable vs. immutable suggestion seems more likely.
