I opt out of WAL in configurePersistentStoreCoordinatorForURL:ofType:modelConfiguration:storeOptions:error:, but my official buildbot is not actually linking against the 10.9 SDK yet, so my experience may not count for much. I also don't use App Sandbox. I haven't seen any problems with my opt out, but have not looked very closely for any. NSPersistentDocument is in such an abismal state, that what you describe is not at all surprising. >2.
