My bad, I had disabled autoresizesSubviews. If I leave it alone, I get -resizeSubviewsWithOldSize: for each step of the animation (so my layout will reflect the current size).
Though I would still be interested in learning how I can obtain the target frame (e.g. for custom hit-testing).
