This is what I'm doing in my text view subclass:
[self setIncrementalSearchingEnabled:NO];
[self.textFinder noteClientStringWillChange];
// modify textStorage here
[self setIncrementalSearchingEnabled:YES];
Seems to be working in my (admittedly limited) testing.
