Mac OS X detection

...is not working "correctly" on my machine.
(Linux SuSE 7.1)

The build systems barfs at me that the "^"
is not ok here:

$( expr $OSTYPE : '^[dD]ardwin.*' )

My man page says that '^' is implicitly
prepended. Shall I provide a patch for
this or is this a system specific thing?
Can some people have a look? (info expr)
