Sorry to step in this late in the discussion, but this problem has been bugging me too for some time. I started trying out the new mozilla javascript and came up with two possible solutions. test1.html is obviously the most interesting approach, but the event api lacks the possibility to determine the position of the mouse cursor in the text, so I didn't find a way to get to textselections, much less make copy/paste work. test4.html is my poorman's solution, it still gives you the possibility of some kind of inline editing, but not as nice as the first example. Still you can use tab and return to navigate through the editable content. These examples work in mozilla, but should require only a little work to make them work in explorer.
