I always thought that the increasing numbers following the Free Software hacker legend was born of frustration with the existing methods and junking lots of past work every time. Then again, maybe "Open Source" hackers are different. Given the numbers shown there, it is remarkable is that the Free Software organisations in Europe (including http://www.fsfeurope.org/ itself) are quite recent creations.
