Latest news with this change and the xerces jars restored to cocoon and tomcat: even XSPs work. There's still a ClassCastException stack trace in the tomcat logs, but it doesn't seem to break anything. Thanks for your help and patience! I'll try the latest released version of cocoon to see if that works as well, or if there's some change in the CVS tree that makes it work now. I still don't really trust it - when I originally filed the bug report, I was using tc 4.0.1 with jdk 1.3.1, so I think the problem can't have been one peculiar to tc 4.0.2+ or jdk 1.4.
